| This
quilt borrows the form of old-style surfboards to commemorate a Hawaiian
hero. Eddie Aikau was a big wave surfer and lifeguard in Hawaii. In 1978
he crewed on the sailing canoe"Hokule'a" from Hawaii to Tahiti. The craft
capsized in rough seas south of Molokai, Hawaii. Eddie insisted on paddling
his surfboard for help to the island of Lanai, Hawaii 12 miles away. He
was never seen again. The expression "Eddie would go" is still used throughout
Hawaii today. Some say the expression originated from his days as a lifeguard
on Oahu's North Shore where he rescued people from surf that no one else
would dare enter. This quilt reminds of of the quiet heroes that come and
go in our lives.
